Connection Questions
The practical uncertainties that matter before you buy the tickets. Open a question for a direct answer.
Can I visit all five countries in one short trip?
It is possible to link them, but a short holiday can become dominated by transfers. Choose two or three coherent stops first; add Iceland only after allowing for flights and airport access. Our route frameworks show what a more measured sequence can look like.
Do I need travel documents within Schengen?
Yes. All five countries are in Schengen, but valid travel documents remain necessary and temporary internal checks can occur. Check requirements for your nationality with the relevant authorities and operator. Schengen membership does not mean identical customs rules, visa eligibility or rights of residence.
Will a rail pass cover the whole route?
Not necessarily. Reservations, supplements, local transport and ferries may need separate payment. Check the exact pass and services before comparing it with point-to-point tickets. See the connection guide before making a pass the foundation of the whole trip.
Does an overnight ferry replace a hotel?
It can replace a hotel night when the cabin and schedule suit you. Compare the complete fare, terminal transfers, check-in requirements and likely sleep quality. Do not count both the cabin and a hotel as included accommodation for the same night unless you intend to pay for both.
Can I travel to Reykjavík by train?
No. Iceland has no passenger railway network. A mainland-to-Iceland trip requires a flight or a substantial sea journey, followed by appropriate ground transport. The Denmark–Iceland ferry does not arrive in Reykjavík, and Keflavík Airport is outside the city.
Is winter a bad time for city hopping?
Not inherently, but shorter daylight, weather disruption and seasonal opening hours need more attention. Keep outdoor plans flexible and avoid fragile onward connections. Check conditions for each destination rather than treating the whole region as one weather zone.
Can I use euros everywhere?
Finland uses the euro. Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland each use their own currency. Do not assume a merchant elsewhere will accept euros or offer a favourable rate. Compare route costs in one reference currency while recording the actual currency you will pay.
What should I book first?
Check the least flexible or least frequent transport first, alongside accommodation availability. Then commit in an order that avoids leaving essential gaps, keeping cancellation terms in view. A cheap room is not useful if the only workable crossing is already full.
How much connection time should I allow?
There is no universal safe interval. Include station or terminal changes, check-in deadlines, bags, accessibility needs and the consequences of delay. Separate tickets may justify an overnight buffer. Operator minimums are not a guarantee against every disruption.
Can I send a route question through this site?
The contact page creates a plain-text draft that you can copy or download. It does not submit or send the message; you choose whether to send it using your own email app. Do not include passports, payment information or other sensitive details.
